Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  How does your live-in program differ from more traditional obedience classes?

A:  First of all, any positive move on your part to train your dog is a good one, regardless of whether you decide upon group classes, private instruction, or a live-in program such as ours.  The main advantage of the live-in type is consistency.  The dog is placed in a fresh environment where it will, from then on, not be able to continue its bad habits.  So much imprinting takes place because every time the dog is handled, played with, or talked to…there is consistency and positive behavior modification.  Also, the training is ongoing, not dependent on your daily schedule or interruptions.  For the busy person, training the most docile pup can be sometimes overwhelming.  Of course, you then have the more difficult dogs. They often require a program such as this
Q:  Will my dog remember me after it has been gone from home for this length of time?

A:  Yes, of course!  Dogs are amazing creatures with great recall facilitated by their superior sense of smell.  In addition, dogs don’t measure time like we humans do, so they don’t discriminate between one week and five weeks.  We have NEVER had a dog forget an owner, even when they were separated for an extended period.  They simply get one good sniff and it’s back to life as usual!
Q:  Is there any assurance that my dog will obey me as well as the trainer when the program is completed?

A:  Yes. Toward the end of the dog’s training time (the final few weeks), you come for scheduled private training sessions where you are schooled in all of the commands and techniques.  You practice it with your dog and are prepared for the transition back to your home.  It is very important that you dedicate time for YOUR instruction.  This is a 50/50 proposition.  The owners need to be trained as well!!
Q:  Will Northfleet help me if I have any questions or problems with my dog after the training is completed?

A:  Yes, we are very accessible and want clients to contact us immediately to clear up any little difficulties they may encounter. Our hallmark is the individualized customer service that we provide.
Q:  Will my dog always live in a dog kennel while in training?

A:  No, the dog is moved around a lot during the course of the day.  There is a time for work, a time for exercise, etc.  Our client dogs are family companions and are treated as such with us.  They go outside to play and relieve themselves.  At night all dogs are kept indoors in a climate controlled area. In addition, if your dog is a small housedog, or a youngster needing further housebreaking,  we share our living space with them as if they were our own pet.
Q:  If we have multiple family members, can they also be included in the training or do you focus on only one “trainer”?

A:  We appreciate anyone who is going to be involved with the dog to take part to some degree.  Welcome is the nanny, dog walker, the mother-in-law, and of course, the children.
Q:  Can my dog stay on his regular diet?

A:  Yes, by all means.  We ask you to supply the food that the dog is accustomed to eating so that we have no digestive upsets.  We are also happy to administer any medications the dog may require.
Q:  Is it permissible to be in contact with Northfleet while our dog is in training?

A:  Absolutely!  In fact, we encourage communication via phone, email, or text.  You may also find updates and photos on our Facebook page.  You are also urged to set up a few visit times to track your dog’s progress and have it explained.  An open discourse throughout the process will assure your success.
Q:  How much time is required of me as far as daily follow-up training after my dog is returned to me.

A:  Actually, you will automatically be practicing most of the commands in your normal day with your dog.  We will show you how to incorporate the training into actual life, as that is what it is about in the first place.  This will go hand in hand with some little assigned “drills” you implement when out walking, etc.
Q:  What if my dog isn’t “done” by the end of the five week period?

A:  Each dog & family is an individual project and training time may vary a little depending on many factors.  We are flexible and our goal is success.  Thus, if the dog (or more likely the owner!) needs a little extra, we accommodate and usually at no extra charge.
